Scholars have approached the study of rabbinic sage stories from a wide range of methodological perspectives, including historical, literary, folkloric and, most recently, cultural studies. Despite this variety of approaches, there exists a broad consensus among scholars on one key issue: sage stories are an essentially aggadic, and therefore non-halakhic, genre.
